Asparagus in Vietnam, a potential crop on grayland.

The Vietnamese asparagus plant is native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia; was imported to Vietnam in the 1970s in Lam Dong. After that, asparagus was planted and replicated in most provinces and cities in Vietnam and evaluated as a potential crop on grayland.

Asparagus has a fairly good drought tolerance, so with the tropical climate in Vietnam, asparagus grows well and gradually becomes popular. Therefore, in recent years, asparagus has been expanded in the provinces of Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi area, Binh Phuoc, Vinh Long, An Giang ... mostly to serve the needs of domestic consumption, neighboring areas and has brought high economic efficiency. Specifically, asparagus is grown once but can be harvested for an average of 4 to 6 years and currently young bamboo shoots are sold in the market at an expensive price, ranging from 100,000 to 180,000 VND/1 kg depending on type.


In addition, Kien Giang province has also implemented a model of growing green asparagus in households in Long Thanh commune, Giong Rieng district, initially for high economic efficiency, capable of meeting the needs of raising incomes. In the coming time, the Farmers' Union of Giong Rieng district intends to continue to replicate this model in many communes in the district, especially where the area of mixed gardens is still located in Hoa Thuan, Ngoc Hoa communes. Hoa An, Hoa Loi… This is good news for farmers. It can be said that asparagus is a new crop with great potential for development and very high economic value, contributing to raising people's incomes. Importantly, asparagus can be a crop that opens up new prospects in local agricultural production and is suitable to be selected as a crop for crop transformation to adapt to climate change. In particular, asparagus plants are not difficult to grow, the plants grow and develop very strongly in full sunlight, with fertile, nutrient-rich soils and with good care as asparagus will give High productivity and quality.

The plant grows and develops well at temperatures from 15 to 30°C, so it can be planted in 2 seasons. Sow late August to early September for planting in February and March and sow late February to April for planting from April to June of the calendar.


Asparagus is suitable for tropical climates. The best growing temperature for this plant is around 24-27 degrees Celsius. This plant likes light; suitable air humidity from 60%-70%, soil moisture 70%-75%; requires low rainfall below 1,000 mm/year; The soil is loose, rich in nutrients, rich in humus, pH from 6.0-7.5 and well drained.


Season: During the year, asparagus can be planted at two times: sowing seeds from August to early September of the solar calendar or sowing seeds at the end of February to April of the solar calendar (if growing asparagus by seeds). The time from seed germination to planting is about 3 months. At the time of planting trees in the garden, avoid periods of peak sunshine and long-term continuous rain (depending on local climatic conditions, suitable planting).


Growing asparagus

Asparagus is suitable for growing on alluvial soil, light soil, sandy soil, volcanic lava, ... or soil with high porosity, rich in humus, rich in organic matter, well drained, easy to drain soil. has a layer of cultivation from 30-40 cm thick. In addition, you should choose a planting garden with a favorable location, actively watering in the dry season and easily draining, not being flooded in the rainy season.


Before planting, the land must be plowed, dried, picked up weeds, treated with fungi and nematodes, and leveled. In particular, there is a small drainage ditch around the area to avoid waterlogging. Fins are finely entangled to prevent insects, insects as well as prevent rainstorms from damaging the roots. When planting trees, it is necessary to check the seedlings again. Seedlings that meet the standards are well-developed plants, must be green, not infected, and grow from 25-30 cm long.


Growing asparagus

Dig a hole 5-10 cm deep depending on the potting height. Depending on geographical conditions, people can choose to grow asparagus in single or double rows. For single row planting, the tree density is 18,000 plants/ha, the distance between plants in one row 40-50 cm apart, rows 90-110cm apart. For double row planting, the tree density is 27,000 plants/ha, the distance between the plants in a row is 40-50 cm, the row is 120-150 cm apart.


After planting, it is necessary to take the soil on both sides of the planting soil to cultivate the roots, cover with a layer of topsoil 5 cm high for the planted stumps to protect the root neck and keep the bamboo shoots upright to photosynthesize with the sun. Need to monitor the plants regularly, if there are damaged, diseased or dead plants, they must promptly carry out additional planting immediately.


There are a few things to keep in mind when harvesting asparagus


Harvest time: harvest the first litter about 4-5 months after planting. Harvest bamboo shoots every morning before 8am (winter) and before 7am (summer). Harvesting method: hand-harvested, grasping the bamboo shoots, tilting 30 degrees, and pulling slightly. You can use scissors to cut shoots close to the underground stem, but pay attention to limit the effect on other shoots.
