In addition to maintaining traditional production models such as growing corn, rice, and livestock farming, for the past five years, the ethnic communities in Si Ma Cai, a border district in the highlands, have learned to maximize the land area by diversifying their crops.

Initially, the cultivation of seasonal vegetables started in Man Than commune, primarily focusing on cabbage with limited land area. However, as the cabbage plants grew well and fetched a good price, the community gradually expanded the cultivation area.

Currently, off-season vegetables in Si Ma Cai are often transported downstream for consumption. At times of scarcity, Si Ma Cai cabbage can be sold for 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg (3 - 4 times higher than the main crop). Therefore, the movement of growing off-season vegetables has gradually spread to other communes in Si Ma Cai district.
